The CSC offers sincere condolences to the family of Lois M. Bloom, who passed away January 14, 2025.

Dr. Bloom, the Edward Lee Thorndike Professor Emerita of Psychology and Education at Teacher’s College, Columbia University, spent her illustrious career revolutionizing the field of language development. Her research was based on intensive longitudinal studies of how children acquire language in relation to developments in thinking, emotional expression, play, and social interaction in the first three years of life.

After receiving a B.A. in 1956 from Penn State, she earned her M.A. at the University of Maryland and her Ph.D. with distinction from Columbia University in 1968. She received many awards and recognitions throughout her remarkable career.

A distinguished alumna at Penn State, Dr. Bloom was an ardent supporter of the Child Study Center. Through her generosity, the Child Study Center’s annual Lois Bloom Lecture supports lectures by outstanding scholars in the field of child studies with a special emphasis on early child development.
