We Are Connected

We Are Connected is an evidence-based curriculum developed by faculty at the University of Virginia that brings groups of undergraduate students together to foster meaningful connections. The program is designed to teach students important skills related to handling conflict, understanding and communicating with those different from oneself, and forming relationships that are deep and supportive. It provides the opportunity for a diverse group of undergraduate students to gather and engage in activities and discussions focused on building connections.

PSYCH 197 Special Topics (1 credit) at Penn State brings together groups of students as part of We Are Connected to get to know one another while discussing key components of making meaningful connections. The course is led by two upper-class student facilitators. Groups of 6-10 students meet once a week for 75 minutes and participate in activities and conversations that help build connections. There are no tests. Open to first-year, second-year, third-year, and transfer students. Students can sign up for one of four sections that meet at different times. Register for this class via LionPATH.

PSYCH 497 Special Topics – The Connection Project: Leadership and Communication is a two-semester course sequence (3 credits per semester) that offers hands-on experience in leadership development, group dynamics, and communication skills. In the first semester, students participate in and observe We Are Connected groups while receiving training in facilitation and leadership strategies. In the second semester, students who demonstrate readiness and interest may step into facilitation roles, guiding conversations that help build community and connection among Penn State students. This course is ideal for undergraduates who are passionate about fostering belonging and improving communication across campus. Only ten students will be admitted to the fall 2025 cohort, and all participants must commit to both semesters of the course.
